Info
The Brunello di Montalcino Vigneti del Versante is not a single vineyard wine, but a cuvée from up to four plots of the hilly landscape around Montalcino. Depending on the vintage, it can be that only one vineyard finds its way into this cuvée. The selection of the grapes is very elaborate and meticulous. After a short cold maceration, Jan Erbach ferments the grapes spontaneously in steel tanks. Three weeks of maceration are allowed before the wine is pressed and filled into large barrels. There the wine lies for three years. It is then bottled without filtration and with little sulphur. After a further year of maturation in the bottle, it is then put on sale.
Color
Dark ruby red
Nose
The nose is dark and autumnal fruits like morello cherries, blackberries and plums dominate the picture. Spices like red pepper, cinnamon and a little rosemary make themselves broad. A little wet forest and undergrowth as well as a gentle spice from the wood resonate in the glass. This seems very grown up. Hardly Mediterranean, no animal tones, but the pure, dark fruit with a lot of spice. With increasing oxygen, a dark, chocolaty nuance also unfolds, which dresses the 2015 Brunello di Montalcino very well.
Palate
It spreads out pluckily. This Sangiovese is racy, yet sublime and distinguished. The delicate tannin is driven by a present acidity. A chalky minerality makes it seem purist and pure. This stands up in the glass like great Burgundy, yet reminds one a bit of the character of a Chambertin. The dark fruit and spice come through to their best advantage. It gains meaty and bloody qualities on the palate that make it a great, long-lasting food companion. The finish seems dark but never mysterious, instead clear and open. What generous wine enjoyment.
Sangiovese can, of course, be vinified in numerous styles. This specimen is noble and elegant. Jan Erbach skillfully knows how to harmonize aromatic diversity, varietal and origin typicity, and a contemporary wine style.
