Tasting note from from 23.08.2021, Copyright Sebastian Bordthäuser

Hohen-Sülzen lies in the valley of the Eisbach, a low mountain stream that rises in the Donnersberg massif and exerts significant climatic influence on the valley. While the days in the Wonnegau can be hot, the temperature amplitudes are greater than in other districts thanks to the cool nights. The wines are characterised by their ripe fruit, fine spice and filigree acidity. The wine was fermented spontaneously and aged 80% in steel and 20% in large wooden barrels.

Color

Rich yellow with green reflections and silver rim.

Nose

The 2020 Weissburgunder from Battenfeld Spanier chats of spring, sunny times and exuberant mood. Delicately fruity, the nose recalls small plump pears, quinces and ripe pome fruit, floral accents of lime blossom in the top note and green almonds and hazelnuts in the base note complete the all-round carefree package.

Mouth

Juicy and finely fruity on the nose, it shines on the palate with ripe stone fruit notes. With an animating drinking flow and delicate phenolics, the straightforward fruit is curated by serious minerality and accelerated by the gently pulsating acidity that accompanies this structurally marked Pinot Blanc into the fruity finish.

Food recommendations from Sebastian Bordthäuser

  • Baked goat cheese with elderflower jelly on wild herb salad
  • Smoked eel in fennel consommé with roasted almonds and courgettes
  • Fresh sausage with ginger pointed cabbage from the pan
