Tasting note from dated 04.10.2021, Copyright Sebastian Bordthäuser

The Mölsheimer Riesling grows comparatively high to the winery's Hohen-Sülzen sites around the village that gives it its name. The cool winds of the Donnersberg massif also ensure a constant flow of air, which, thanks to the rejuvenation of the Zellertal, is like a wind tunnel at this point. In combination with the high altitude, this maintains the acidity of the wine, the concise marker of this local wine. Grown on bare limestone rock without any significant support, the grapes were harvested by hand and spontaneously vinified in single and double barrels. The 2016 Mölsheimer Riesling is a late release from the winery's Treasure Collection to demonstrate the wines' ripeness.

Color

Bright straw yellow, radiant and clear.

Nose

The impetuously youthful notes of the Riesling have given way to more grown-up, secondary aromas Orange peel, walnut shells and rye sourdough bread crust outline the nose of the 2016 Mölsheimer Riesling Ortswein from Battenfeld-Spanier. Roasted and salted hazelnuts, lemon oil and a little lemon balm make the wheel go round and underline the power of maturity without ageing. A clear case for the big glasses.

Mouth

On the palate, it is bursting with juice and power with an athletically defined body. Taut and sinewy, it combines the ripe fruit of quince and dried tangerine peel with a mineral melt and vertical drinkability, fuelled by the crumbly yet driving acidic nerve. An altogether dark type with a clear citric nerve, Mediterranean herbal aromas and profound minerality - drinking stones for advanced drinkers!

  • Cantonese mussels with mandarin zest and black beans
