A Barbera that seems to expand the boundaries of the grape variety and unabashedly gives itself like a Great Pipi Fine tannins, vibrant acidity and its concentrated fruit with a transparent appearance on the palate as well as the ethereal cool notes in the finish easily qualify it for the upscale tables. Toast, sandalwood and a little bergamot in the top note crown this multilayered and complex high-performance Barbera.

Vietti is one of the pioneers of the Piedmont cru concept. The history of the winery goes back to the 19th century and the first wine was sold under its own name as early as 1919. At a time when the traditional style still envisaged site cuvées, they began to give the wines a new origin and profile through defined provenance and the single-vineyard idea.

La Crena is Vietti's top Barbera and grows in Agliano Terme on calcareous marl soils. The south-facing site covers eight hectares, the oldest part planted in 1932. The grapes are harvested by hand, cold macerated for 48 hours in open stainless steel fermenters and then fermented for a fortnight. The La Crena undergoes malolactic fermentation in barriques, where it matures for 18 months before being bottled unfined and unfiltered.

Color

Dark ruby red with a black core and light violet reflections.

Nose

Exuberant to beguiling, that's how you can describe the nose of Vietti's 2018 La Crena Barbera d'Asti. Opening with a big bouquet of purple lilac, closely followed by a handful of violets, the lush fruit quickly shows the way Amarena cherries, blackberries and mulberries fill its fruit basket, carved from the finest French oak with its distinctive wood spice and toasted notes. Toast, sandalwood and some bergamot in the top notes crown this multilayered and complex high-performance Barbera.

Mouth

Juicy with deep fruit and fine spice, La Crena opens on the palate. This is followed by the ripe and slightly toasty tannins from the ageing process, which give it its characteristic spiciness without dominating the wine. The leitmotif is and remains the beguiling dark cherry. A Barbera that seems to expand the boundaries of the grape variety and is as uninhibited as a big Pipi-fine tannins, vibrant acidity and its concentrated fruit with a transparent appearance on the palate as well as the ethereal cool notes in the finish qualify it without any problems for the upscale tables.
