“Aus den Lagen” Riesling 2021

This year, the Christmann winery's range has changed. The estate and local wines are now replaced by the wines From the layers. These wines come from the estate's own classified vineyards along the Haardtrand, all of which have either the status of a Erste Lage or a Große Lage according to the criteria of the VDP. This 2021 Riesling comes from the sites Gimmeldinger Kapellenberg and Meerspinne, Ruppertsberger Linsenbusch and Reiterpfad, Neustadter Vogelsang as well as Königsbacher Idig and Ölberg. It was fermented spontaneously and two-thirds warm in large wooden barrels.

The Riesling From the sites beguiles with a balanced mixture of fine, rather restrained fruit, finest yeast, herbs, crushed rock and chalk, some hay and rootwork and a touch of reduction as well as a squeeze of lime. This comes across as juicy and intense on the one hand, crystalline and fine on the other.

On the palate, the Christmanns take this yin and yang of intensity and finesse to the extreme. The fruit is dominated by citrus notes and some crunchy stone fruit, but above all, the salinity prevails here with a tingling and pulsating acidity and minerality. If you have tasted pretty much all of the 2021 Grosses Gewächse from the Pfalz, then it is clear that this wine can easily keep up with them and would outdo many wines with its balance, its length, the noble texture and the energy which this 2021 Riesling owns.
