Juan Carlos López de Lacalle, owner and winemaker of Artadi, is considered one of the biggest names in the Spanish wine industry. The winery was once a cooperative of 13 winemakers who owned well-situated vineyards around the town of Laguardia in the wine region of Rioja Alavesa owned. Juan Carlos recognised the potential of these wonderful vineyards and bought the bodega, immediately changing the approaches and style of winemaking.

Modern & Fruity

The winemaking is modern and focuses on fruit-driven wines that are characterised by the terroir of individual vineyards. French oak is used here, not American as is usually the case in Rioja. This allows the main variety, the Tempranillo, to develop its inherent natural elegance.

From the 2 hectare vineyard El Pisonwhose vines were planted in 1945, to his properties in Alicante and Navarre, he is both a precise and gifted craftsman. His mastery of Monastrell and Garnacha now complements his almost alchemical talent with Tempranillo. Attention to detail is evident at all stages of the process, from pruning in the vineyard to the six additional sorting vats in the winery and fermentation in specially designed vats to ensure optimal extraction of fruit and tannin.

The results are excellent.Vinas De Gain comes from vines older than 25 years. It is a premium wine that is 100% Tempranillo and comes from grapes grown in high altitude vineyards in Rioja Alavesa. It is the most approachable member of Artadi's range, but shows impressive purity with layers of flavour reminiscent of the complexity of Burgundy.

Artadi - Masterful Rioja

Juan Carlos Lopez de Lacalle from Artadi tasting his wines

Artadi produces exemplary Riojas without and with the use of oak, including outstanding Reservas and single-vineyard wines such as the Viña El Pison. A luxurious cuvée Gran Reserva, Grandes Añadas, was produced for the first time in 1994.

His Bodega Artazu in Navarra is located in the village of Santa Cruz and uses 100% Grenache from 100-year-old vines. As Navarre continues to emerge from the shadow of its famous neighbour Rioja, Artadi's wines help us understand the quality and identity of this region.
