The Ahr is one of the smallest and northernmost wine-growing regions in Germany. It all too often flies under the radar, is never loud, but always does what it has always done Pinot Noir. It comprises and 560 hectares of vineyards, 85% of which are planted with Pinot Noir and, despite its location north of the 50th parallel, is considered an original red wine destination. The great capital of the Ahr are the best sites between Altenahr and Marienthal, the heart of which consists of weathered slate and greywacke, some of which still have unpurified core pieces. Even if the rest of the world dreams of Burgundy as a great role model when it comes to Pinot Noir, the Ahr takes its own place on planet Pinot with its Pinot Noirs from slate and new self-confidence.
The Ahrweiler Spätburgunder is one of the two local wines from Bertram-Baltes. The puristic sip from the different Ahrweiler sites was pressed from 100% Pinot Noir and comes from old, large-berried clones. The whole clusters are pressed and fermented in used wooden barrels made of local oak with 25% whole grapes until they are drawn off after 6 months on the fine yeast and bottled unfined and unfiltered.
Color
Ruby red with light violet reflections, transparent and clear.
Nose
The nose still peeks out a little shyly under the fine reduction note, so it is recommended to jump into the carafe, preferably upside down. With increasing aeration, the delicate slate notes of the Ahr reveal themselves, above which the fruit always seems to float like zeppelin. Dark cherries, red berry fruits and fully ripe raspberries announce a lively fruit, with light smoky notes, black pepper, juniper and cardamom hovering above, as well as light floral notes in the overtone range. Animating, independent and straightforward; pour - drink up!
Mouth
The 2018 Ahrweiler Spätburgunder from Bertram-Baltes flows into the gullet with a clear as a bell response and leaves transparent brilliance on the palate. Framed by accurately contouring tannins and underpinned by jovial fruit, it is additionally fueled by the ripe and agile acidity, which attests to its enormous drinkability. Minerality, fruit, acidity and tannin outline it with a pointed pen and make you want to refill your glass with high frequency.
